I
n my opinion the best way to drive a car. So when my friend Greg and I decided to take a trip to Cape Town we decided that car rental would be the first on our "must-do" list. We chose a small hatchback to navigate our journey from Cape Town to Hermanus and back to the Cape winelands.

On the road ...

We wanted to go to Hermanus for two reasons. First and foremost is a visit to my old and dear friend Michelle, and secondly to the whale festival. The journey from Cape Town to Hermanus is beautiful. A spectacular view as you drive Sir Lowry's flower-filled barn, then a small farmhouse and a temporary store where you can buy a new farm product that you can't find in the city. So I stopped at Anti Millie's Farm Stall. She is known for her fresh home-cooked pies but we could not resist standing up to be bitten first. As we sat in the car enjoying one of Aunt Millie's most famous pies, we were surrounded by a breath of fresh air all around us.

Back on the road the joy of seeing my old friend and the fact that I was again on the open road was exactly what I loved to drive in the countryside. Being on an open road always gives me a feeling of freedom that you do not feel much when you live in the city. There’s no rush to just go from A to B, but take your time to appreciate what most people just take for granted in their chase. Road travel is not about your destination, but your journey.

Whale time ...

When we finally arrived in Hermanus we were greeted by something I really hated, cars. Visitors like us come to town at a Whale event. Fortunately it was not a busy thing, unlike the movement of people in big cities. After finding a parking space, we waited in the bar for Michelle to join us. He soon joined us and we enjoyed a wonderful life. After catching a while, we moved on to shore to watch the whales. Every year the whales migrate to the waters of Cape Town during the breeding season, which gives us as much fun as it does a bit of a show. Whales move closer to the harbor and each view of the tail or wing causes great excitement for everyone who views the beach. How lucky a person feels to be a part of what should be such a small part of his or her life.

After a long time just enjoying watching whales we moved on to the festivals that took place in the city. There were empty markets and beer gardens, children playing around faces and painted balloons, and music playing on the speakers so that everyone could enjoy themselves. The situation was tense, and everyone seemed happy.

We continue our journey ...

After spending another two days in Hermanus, meeting Michelle, sharing jokes and watching more whales, Greg and I went in again. We took the long road back to the Cape winelands. I was so excited when Greg was driving. I was taking a lot of pictures, but being an amateur photographer, it almost sounded like a bad thing in the beauty of the winelands. You can’t really capture the essence of what you experience when you look at such amazing views. We stopped at what seemed to be all the little shops on the side of the road, giving ourselves time to simply enjoy the splendor that surrounds us. We took all the dirt roads and paddled along any highway. We have not set schedules and have not booked any accommodation before, as this is not the way a road trip should be. It's about enjoying whatever comes your way and be instantaneous!
