S
un-drenched in Greek sun, sometimes near waves and sometimes perched on a mountaintop or hidden among rocks and dense vegetation, our chapels have a unique beauty and typical Greek landscape.

Under the umbrella of our blue sky, the white church buildings stand quietly and intertwined with the unique Greek landscape. The farthest from them are waiting for the visitor or the day of the holy festival to which they have dedicated themselves to put on their garments and flood the earth. Everything has its own unique history and many of them are connected with the myths and traditions of their area.

We have collected some of them and introduced them to you as summer approaches and one of us can be found near one of them. Enjoy your sailing time and do not hesitate to share them with your friends.

1 Agios Stefanos - Syros Island

Agios Stefanos in the Galissas region, southwest of Syros, is a Catholic cathedral built on a cave above the sea. It did not need a floor and a ceiling to be built. Only two walls are built to the right and to the left. Traditionally, Agios Stefanos' chapel formed the Galissas fisherman, Stefanos, who was in danger of a huge octopus that dragged him into the sea. He made a vow to Saint Stephen that he would save him and thus built a church in this remote place.

The Zoodochos Pigi Monastery or Panagia Kalamiotissa is located on a small isthmus that separates the main part of the island from the Kalamos peninsula. It is built on the site of the ancient obscure temple of Apollo Aeglitis, which was connected to the city by the cobblestone stone Iera Odos (parts still preserved). The walls of both the church itself and its enclosure, which is now part of the monastery's enclosure, are kept quite high.

She is the patron saint of the island, the beloved Virgin of the inhabitants, who seek her favor for help and protection. The spectacular natural scenery, the vast expanse of the ocean, and the eerie religious atmosphere of the day provide the visitor with intense emotional satisfaction and happiness.

5. Panagia Hozoviotissa - Amorgos Island

The Panagia Hozoviotissa monastery lies to the south, on the rocky shores of Amorgos. Surrounded by bare, threatening rocks, it can only be seen in the sea, stretching beneath the rocks, 300 feet [300 m] high. The white, non-slip surface blends well with the colored, uneven colored stones. Only white geometric volumes and straight structural links, which, in combination with light, create a sense of a multi-level space.

6. Panagia Thalassini - Andros Island

It is built on a rock in the sea, at the entrance to the land. Traditionally, Panagia Thalassini protects those who sail the seas, as well as Agios Nikolaos. On a clear night the icon of the Virgin Mary emerged from the sea and came ashore with a strange glow. The people of the island follow the light that led them to a small cave. Amazed, in the cave, over the seaweed, they saw a statue of the Virgin Mary. They worshiped him and took him to the church building of St Athanasius. The next day, however, the picture turned to his cave! So the people on the island decide to build a temple on top of a cave. The work on the temple was done at a rapid pace and Ecclesia was almost ready in a very short time. But the roof was missing because there was no wood. The virgin Mary took care of him. A ship carrying logs was being threatened by the sea outside Andros. The captain, along with the sailors, asked the Virgin to rescue them from the imminent danger. He lighted a boat and made wood in the sea. So the ark survived. The logs slowly descend along the shore near the cave, so that the artisans cover the uncovered Church. In the old days, in May 1790, just before the Aegean uprising by Lambros Katsonis, 18 skirts and Algerian looters, the worst pirates of the Aegean period, were threatened. Distraught, peace-loving islanders rushed to the church of the Virgin Mary for protection. After praying fervently and crying out in despair and hoping for the help of the Virgin Mary, they took a picture of her and led her to the edge of a cliff, begging for her deliverance. Then a tempestuous wind blew, dragging the pirates into the deep and drowning all the wicked criminals. Only a captive Christian who swam to land, and when he reached the salvation of faithful believers, he told them before the shipwreck, he saw a great lightning bolt from the rock and struck the ships.
